abscessed= rotten tooth, infected and needs a vigorous course of anti-biotics and possibly extraction or root canal

root canal= involves killing the pulp/root of the tooth and clearing up the infection etc trying to save the tooth

check wikipedia

abcessed= infection in the jaw line.root canal where they go into you gums and remove the root that is causing you pain and the infection
