Diet vs. regular?!

Question: Is diet soda bad for you and your teeth like regular soda?

Answers: Is diet soda bad for you and your teeth like regular soda?

It is the combination of sugar, acid and bacteria that creates the plaque that causes decay. In regular soda you already have high sugar and acid content, so not brushing well means the teeth get eaten away.

Diet soda doesn't have sugar but has acid. Now there are differences among the sodas if you check out the ingredients. Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew--the third ingredient on the list is phosphoric acid. This is not found in pop like Sprite or Ginger Ale. These only have carbolic acid. So, the colas give you a double whammy of acid, since they contain both phosphoric and carbolic acid, whether it's diet or regular. Check out the ingredients label.

Have you ever put a penny in a glass of Coke overnight? Notice how shiny it gets? Well, it eats away the enamel, which is the strongest bone in your body, the same way.

In addition, the etchant that is used to roughen enamel to put on the braces is a 37% concentration of phosphoric acid. We only leave it on for one minute! How much more damage do you think you are doing by swigging that 500 ml bottle of Coke, diet or not?

Sorry, but I tell my patients that pop is as bad for your teeth as cigarettes are for your lungs. Neither item has a single redeeming reason to be ingested.

Diet pop, non-Cola, can be had as an occasional treat--everything in moderation. Be sure to rinse afterwards, if you can't brush your teeth. It will reduce the acid left behind. Someone may suggest using a straw--that protects the back teeth but can damage the front ones more, so it's a no-win situation.

As hard it is to say, diet soda is worse for your teeth.

Diet soda has more acid in it making your teeth wear out faster and easier.

But you shouldn't drink soda period.

It definitely is every bit as bad for you as regular soda, if not more. Another thing to remember is that it can cause headaches because of the artificial sweeteners.

I personally drink diet soda because it doesn't have the sugar that regular soda has.

Any soda is bad for your teeth. The acid in it can damage the enamel.
