A question for all dental professionals?!

Question:

A question for all dental professionals?

Would you think that the use of dental bleaching trays at night might help to retain "some" of the moisture on the teeth, or enough to be of help, aiding in the reduction of dental caries associated with patients who suffer with dry mouth due to medical conditions or medications they take? I'm curious as to the response I'll get with this question, thank you all in advance!

I'm just asking for thoughts on this, any suggestions to a revised stint, or any comments. So tell me if you think this concept could be of any help, and any type of solutions that might be of use if this could possibly be of any help with the effects of dry mouth in regard to dental caries. Dr. Sam, I would appreciate your opinion on this. I look forward to reading any remarks given.

What about any patients who may have reported increased saliva production when wearing mouth guards or bleaching stints? I have not read any articles or reports to confirm this might be of help. I'm in a debate over this, and I don't like to lose, especially when I think I'm right. Although, I may have missed something, but I have no knowledge of any studies made or any dental reports on it?

Yes, I would also think so.

I would also think that the use of "trays" without any solutions, would cause dry mouth to be possibly even more severe.

Answers:

I agree with toothdoc. Ideas of things you could do to help would be to brush more often with soft bristle brush and a sensitive toothpaste (like sensodyne), and use a topical fluoride at home (dentists can prescribe these to patients). There are saliva substitutes that can be used, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Salivart. It is difficult to duplicate saliva and it is probably something that people wouldn't even think could be a big deal.

I wish you (or the person with this condition) the best.
