Jaw locks and pain?!

Question: I have had my tongue pierced for 18 months, and for about a year, or just over, my jaw clicks alot when i eat, and sometimes i cant open my mouth, and there is pain.and if i try to open it there is a lot of pain, and i have to wait ages before i can open it again. I cant eat or anything when this happens. Whats wrong?

Dear Yabo D,

Don't worry, you don't have lockjaw; The pain you are having is in the Temporo-Mandibular Joint, or TMJ. This is a ball and socket joint like your knee. When the jaw is clicking, it mean that the condyle (ball part) is not going straight back into the socket where it should fit. Locking up, muscle pain, headaches are all symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction.

You need to see a dentist to check out what, specifically, is causing your problem and see what treatment will help you. There are many different triggers that can cause it. Do you chew a lot of gum? Do you have a crossbite, meaning your top and bottom teeth don't overlap properly? Do you grind or clench your teeth at night? Are you a very stressed person?

In the meantime, don't eat chewy foods. Take Motrin, Tylenol or Advil for the inflammation. You can put warm compresses on the jaw joint to help soothe it. (Heat for chronic, ice for acute pain.)

There are many different remedies depending what is your cause, so you need to be assessed. Treatment is usually anywhere from a simple nightguard to orthodontic treatment.

I have attached a link to verify and augment what I have explained.

there are some practices u can do to relieve that... but it should be given from ur dentist face to face to avoid missunderstanding....
and there are muscle relaxants that may help in ur case..

i wish u good health
