What should I do?!

Question:

What should I do?

I'm 16 and I haven't seen a dentist in about 3 years, I've got some cavities in my teeth and the other day I rang a dentist and I've got an appointment but it's not for another 6 weeks.

Anyway, I've got this one tooth and today it's started to hurt quite badly, I think it's a pretty bad cavity in it - it's like a brownish hole in my tooth, it's pretty big and it's kind of rotted away the top of my tooth at the back. So where usually there are like 4 corners on a tooth, on this tooth the two back corners have gone.

Anyway, it's been sore all of today but I had an exam at school so I couldn't do anything about it. What should I do until my appointment to stop it from hurting so much or getting any worse? It's not like a really bad toothache like an abscess - I had that once before and it was agony, this time the pain is maybe about 5/10, but it's there all the time.

I don't think that it's an emergency, it's not like the pain I was in when I had an abscess that time before. And the tooth isn't broken in half, it's just got a big cavity. Will the dentist still see me sooner if it's not really an emergency?

Answers:

You should call your dentist and explain your symptoms they may be able to get you in sooner, or at least suggest what you could do to alleviate the pain until your appointment. But it sounds like your tooth broke in half, and that is usually an emergency. Definitely give them a call.
