Has any one else had this dental problem?!

Question:

Has any one else had this dental problem?

I just got back from the dentist and they said that I need to see a periodontic, and if I dont see there is a possiability that my teeth could fall out. I brush twice a day and I floss. I am totally freaking out. I dont have insurance and that would be so expensive. My question is, is this really nessecarry.

Answers:

Do you remember anything about periodontal pocket numbers being called out or discussed with you? If you had several teeth (10 or more) that had pockets greater than 6mm than I would consider you a higher risk for dentures or partials in the future. Personally, I would treat a patients gum disease before sending them to the periodontist unless the bone levels were severely low. Many hygienists' and dentists' want to refer patients out even if the pockets are 5-7mm deep. I can, and have treated patients with pockets this deep and deeper. If your dentist will not treat your gum disease then you may want to get another opinion. The factors for referral for me would be: your age, how deep the pockets are, how many teeth are involved that have deep pockets, what condition is the bone level. If you smoke the odds are strongly against you.........
Education is the key to treating gum disease. It does not matter what type of gum therapy you have (Scaling/Root Planning, or Flap Surgery) if you don't learn HOW to take better care of your teeth, you will lose them.
