I am taking the medicine Clindyamacin?!

Question: I believe that is closely the spelling. It is for a root canal I am getting done I have read about it and even asked my aunt who is a nurse and she said it was okay and nothing would happen, but I am nervous to take it as it said it could cause bad intestianl problems. Also why do u take antibotics before a root canal wouldnt u take it after the root canal?

Your risk of getting gi problems is small and is more common in people who take the antibiotic for a long time. If you are allergic to penicillin that is probably why you got clindamycin. If your tooth is infected right now then taking the antibiotics prior to the root canal may help the anesthetic work better. If your tooth needs a root canal for a reason other than infection you don't need to take them. Check with your dentist and ask him/her if it is necessary.

The antibiotic that you take before the root canal is to help with the infection and so that you don't end up having a large mass on your face. Clindamycin is a very common antibiotic used in the dental as well as many other fields. Your dentist placed you on this for a reason, obviously the benefits are greatly out weighed by the risks/side effects. Also keep in mind, every medication that you take-- they all have side effects.
