Can a dentist tell you have a cavity by just looking at your tooth?!

Question: Went to the dentist today for cleaning and he adv I had 2 cavities. Can they tell this by just looking at your teeth or do the xrays show it? Also, the root canal he did last year still feels sensitive at times and when I told him this, he adv there was an air hole there and a cavity next to it. Is it possible he didn't do the root canal correctly in the 1st place?

When a dentist examines your teeth they do several things. They look at your xrays which do show cavities (they look like dark spots on your lighter tooth structure). They visually examine your teeth, sometimes cavities present as dark brown or yellowish spots. Then they examine the teeth with what is called an explorer. If the explorer "sticks" into suspicious spots, that signifies a cavity. As far as the root canal treatment that was done, I would need to know more about the actual tooth and what kind of sensitivity you are having to give you any kind of constructive answer. Most dentists won't attempt a root canal if they don't think they can do it properly but occasionally things happen that give a less than ideal but still acceptable result. I hope this helps.

yes they can tell my just looking at it. Dont know the answer to the root canal question

They can tell by xrays and sometimes by just looking at a
tooth. It probably isn't the root canal but the tooth next to it.

if your cavitites are big enough for your dentist to see then it is possible. And your root canals well.... there might be a little chance that your dentist did it wrong. But not for sure. I never had a root canal. Hope this helps. =D

yes they can see a cavity in your tooth. the x rays will show them too, if they are too small to see just by looking .

uhmm yeah, they can tell if u have cavities widout xrays and xrays can also show.
I think it is possible that he messed up with you root canal first
