What should I do to prepare for getting my wisdom removed to reduced pain and sw!

Question: I am getting my wisdom teeth out in a couple weeks. Any tips to reduce swelling and possibly pain? I will be getting vicoden for sure. I am also being very diligent on my brushing, flossing, and listerin twice a day since I think a healthy mouth would help a lot.

Any foods to avoid? My oral surgeon just told me to come in with a good attitude and all would be fine.

You can't really do anything about the swelling. It will go down when it's good and ready. It took me a full seven days to recover completely. It helped me to put an ice pack over where the pain was and it would help to numb it. You can't really do anything about the pain and swelling except wait it out. I had to stop taking the vicoden the second day. It made me feel dizzy and like I was going to throw up. It doesn't matter what you eat before you're surgery. Milk shakes, smoothies, and soup are all your going to be eating afterwards. I'm not gonna lie it will be a rough few days. You'll think that you will never be able to recover but don't worry you will very, very soon! And the surgeon is right just come in with a good attitude and everything will be fine. Good luck!

you dont need to do anything...they numb it for you..or put you under anaesthetics depending on where you live...but it doesnt hurt..honest

I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago. The surgery itself did not last long; one moment the nurse was telling administering a pre-anesthesia medication and the next I was in a recovery room with a nurse and my father (and no recollection of having walked down the hall). I was given a cold pack to take home as well as prescriptions for pain medication. As the anesthesia wore off, the pain did become more evident. The medication helped but often made me nauseous. Using cold packs several times throughout the day can reduce pain and swelling. I was warned about dry sockets but it took a few days to realize I had them. The pain I had was more of an intense dull ache rather than the sharp pain I had expected to accompany them. I went back to the office and they said I did indeed have dry sockets. They packed them with what was basically a thin strip of material soaked in cloves. It helps with the pain but tastes horrible. They were replaced every couple days until the pain subsided. The last time I went in to have them removed, a nurse suggested drinking Faygo pop to help with the taste. I did not have the chance to try this, but if it works, I really wish I'd known about it in the beginning.
OK, that was a mouthful, but I hope you find it helpful. Oh, and one more tip--try using some of those Ensure drinks mixed with ice cream to make a yummy and vitamin packed shake. Good luck, and you will be fine!

I did one last week. Got a list of post op instructions, including:

- Ice pack (provided) on in 30 min intervals for swelling in 24 hours following, and warm/moist pad after that
- Gauze changed every hour until blood stops
- Highly liquid diet in first 24 hours. No hot food (soup is good, but make sure it cools down). No spitting/rinsing/smoking/etc. Should be able to go back to regular diet and brushing after a day or two, and warm salt water rinses for about a week.

-For pain, you'll get pain killers. I only did 1 and it was simple, so I'm just using over the counter Extra Strength Tylonel since I don't want to be knocked out, and it works.

Good luck and don't worry, if you had pain like me beforehand, it'll be worth it afterwards :)
