Braces for an overbite?!

Question: Hi
I was wondering, how does braces work for a person with an overbite? More frequently, do they move the top set of teeth backwards? Or the bottom set forwards?

I have an overbite and I find it hard to bite with my braces. Do I continue with the way I have been biting OR do i need to change my ways? If change, how do I bite...?

Thanks in advance.

About a eight months ago I had a overbite brace but I finished needing it in December.

I have a feeling there is only one type of overbite brace (the one with the outward ridges that makes your bottom jaw stick out a bit).

To answer your question your bottom teeth move forward but you jaw goes back to it's usual place. You notice a difference but don't expect brilliant results.

Keep biting the way your biting you will get the hang of it. I found it easier to bite on the ridges it also helps to keep food out of the top of the brace.

Any more questions feel free to e-mail me.

Hope I helped!

with an overbite dont you need an operation
my cousin might get one

from what i heard, retainers will do just fine for an overbite.

I just had a retainer and "headgear" for my overbite which worked fine.

It will take a while to notice a change in the way you bite though. For the time being carry on as you are and next time you see your orthodontist ask him or her if there is anything you can change.

With me though I just started to naturally change my bite as my teeth moved.

For an overbite, the upper braces pull the teeth backwards.
