What causes periodontial disease?!

Question: I brush my teeth and gums everyday with an electric toothbrush and floss too. My dentist told me that I have periodontial disease. So, does anyone know the cause of it and will my gums be back to normal?

Periodontal disease starts with plaque and tartar buildup under the gum line. If it's not removed, it hardens and forms what's called calculus. This begins to cause the gums to pull away from the teeth and form pockets, which allows the plaque to build up deeper, causing deeper pockets...etc. Regular brushing and flossing is a good preventative measure, however, regular cleanings are a must as well. No matter how good your home care is, you will still miss some. Your hygienist is trained to see and clean everything. If the disease progresses too far, you will start to have bone loss. If you see your dentist regularly and follow his/her advise for treatment, your gums will usually get healthy again. However, you will never get back the bone you've lost. It's important to maintain the bone level and avoid losing anymore. Some people, for who knows what reason, are more susceptible to periodontal disease, and must be more diligent with both home and professional care. Hope this helps!
