Difference between iv sedation and general anesthesia??!


Question: when i had my wisdom teeth extracted they gave me an iv....and said i would be sedated is this the same as general anesthesia?

IV sedation is also a form of general anesthetia ,but here the level of sedation is to just calm u down and cooperate during the procedure ,while in general anesthetia u will be completely KNOCKED OFF and will not be aware of what's happening!!!

Sedation is when you are awake but not really with it (sort of out of it). General anesthesia is when you are completely put to sleep, you need a breathing tube inserted to breath for you.

A general anesthetic removes your protective reflexes (like coughing or gagging), while iv sed doesn't. Some people continue to have a fair amount of consiousness with the iv sedation, but you find you don't care so much.

that means Intra-Venous. that is when they put a needle in your arm and it goes into your blood stream. a general would be an inhalant. and a local would be a shot in that area
