Braces??????!

Question:

Braces??????

why do brackets break or pop off

Answers:

It's usually from something you've eaten, that you bit into that was hard, remember to always cut your food up into bite size pieces so you can chew with the molar teeth. Chewing gum is another reason, or flossing and pulling on the arch wire too hard. Biting your finger nails or chewing on other items that you shouldn't like tops of pens or pencils can cause them to come off.

Also a poor bonding of the cement to the tooth can cause it to happen. Occasionally advancing the wire too fast (too much pressure on the brackets) can cause the brackets to pop off, which happens very rarely. Some patients have to have their "bite opened" so the upper teeth don't hit the lower brackets when closing together. This is a common reason since the lower jaw can occlude in so many directions when chewing.

So as you can see there are many reasons, you need to watch what you are doing so you don't extend your treatment time by having to keep getting brackets bonded again. Every time one pops off, that tooth isn't activated, so it's not being moved with the others and this prolongs treatment. Hope I've been of some help and good luck with your ortho!
