I was the world's biggest dental chicken! I didn't go to the dentist for over twenty years until I couldn't take it anymore. When I went I needed two fillings. I was terrified! Beyond terrified! When i got to the office the dentist gave me a pill, waited until I could no longer speak coherently, then led me to the little room in the back. He gave me some nitrous oxide, then when I was sound asleep he did the fillings. When I woke up I was dizzy and dopey and sleepy (I wasn't bashful or doc, just three of the seven dwarves) My hubby took me home and tucked me into bed I slept off the rest of the sedation. The top of my mouth felt weird, It felt like the place where the freezing went was lumpy. I con't think of another word other than lumpy. Cold, maybe, and lumpy. Later, when the freezing was out the tooth that got an unexpected root canal tingled for a while.. It wasn't anything horrible or debilitating. The next day my mouth felt odd, like the muscles were a bit saggy. I called the dentist and he said that I had more work than expected and that any odd feelings or numbness would subside and if I was distressed in any way to return and he would see what he could do to help; such as prescribe some pain killers. It felt sort of like how the arms or legs feel when they get a bit of pins and needles, nothing horrible and it does subside.

I go to the dentist again in a couple weeks, and for the first time I'm not totally terrified. Talk to your dentist before hand, none of them are like Steve Martin in "Little Shop of Horrors." Worrying about it was far worse than the actual visit. Once I got there and it was all over I wondered why I was so terrified.
