Pain with braces?!

Question:

Pain with braces?

I've had braces for almost 2 years, so the pain and suffering that goes along with them is nothing new to me. I visited my orthodontist yesterday, and I feel as if this time the pain is worse than it's ever been. Advil and Tylenol aren't doing anything for me, and I don't have any of that numbing gel laying around. What can I take!? Is Vicodin too extreme?

Answers:

The real question here is why are you still having pain two years after starting orthodontics? The average treatment time for orthodontics should be 1-1 1/2 years. You are already past the average time and discomfort (if there is any at all) should occur mostly in the first half of treatment. After two years you should be all-but-finished and there really should be no pain at all. Either your orthodontist is using outdated materials and methods or you have a non-orthodontic problem with your teeth. Is there any active decay going on? Any periodontal disease, gum disease, etc.? Have you been checked by your general dentist? Have you asked your orthodontist why treatment is taking so long and why it's hurting so much? You may want to have your general dentist take x-rays of the front teeth to ensure that you are not having "root resorption." Good luck.
