What are the black spots on my gums?!


Question:

What are the black spots on my gums?

My dad recently noticed he has a small black spot on the gum of his bottom jaw, i would apresiate it if you knew anyhing about this.
- he has not recently had a filling
- is a heavy diet coke drinker
- overeater


Answers:

It could be a blood vessel close to the surface, natural pigmentation that is common, an abscess forming, an amalgam tattoo or something more serious. If it's something that he's never seen before and just came up out of the blue, then he may need to have the dentist take a look at it, just to play it safe. It's probably nothing, but it never hurts to have it checked. If it goes away or starts to fade, I would say he may have bumped his mouth with something. If it stays or gets larger then he should see his dentist immediately. I hope I've been of some help and good luck!
