- As a Dentist do you compete surgery without a MD ?
- Can You get a DDS/MD Degree ?
Answers:
To become a dual-degree oral surgeon, you need to finish dental school first to get your DDS, get into a 6-year dual-degree Oromaxillofacial Surgery post-grad program, and complete it to get your MD.
Dental school is 4 years in the U.S. except at one school (University of the Pacific-- 3 years).
Dual-degree OMFS programs are 6 years.
Yes, you can do basic oral surgery (such as tooth extractions) with just a DDS degree, if you are proficient at a procedure and can do it to the same level of care as an oral surgeon. Obviously you won't be doing really complicated stuff like LeFort Osteotomy/orthognathic surgery unless you have been through formal OMFS training.
