Rapid Palate Expander (SARPE)????!

Question:

Rapid Palate Expander (SARPE)????

I am getting a palate expander in a week and then will have surgery on my upper jaw two days later. I know there will be a gap in between my front teeth....so for those of you who have been through this before:
How long after you stopped turning the appliance did the gap go away?
Did you try fake teeth or wax to cover up the gap?
How badly did the expander tear up your cheeks?
How long did you have to wear the expander?
How satisfied are you with your new profile?

Thanks so much!

Answers:

I had a rapid expander for 6 months, 3 months into having the expander, my braces were put on (I was 18yo then) The gap will not go away as long as the palate expander is attached. It takes a lot of getting used to, you wont be able to talk normal for a while. Be careful, there is a little hole in the expander where the key goes, and you can get your tounge cought, a tastebud. You are going to have a lot of saliva in your mouth for the first couple of days, it all takes some getting used to. I dont want to scare you, but after you turn the key,(i did 3 times a day) it was slightly painful. I took 2 Alieve, and the pain went away. After 3 months, I had my braces put on, and the gap closed up w/i a few months. It is a forgettable pain once you see what your teeth look like after the change! Because I had the palate expander, I only had my braces on for 1 1/2 years! Best of luck to you.
