Scaling and root planning?!

Question: I'm going on Monday (eep!) for Scaling and Root Planning. I'm really nervous as I don't know what to expect.

Can anyone who has had experience with this tell me what goes on during this.. from the numbing to the dental procedure itself?

I have had it done a couple of times. The plaque is to far below gum line to remove without numbing the area. They numb you the same way they do when you get a filling. Then proceed to clean the teeth about the same way as usual but they go farther below the gum line. Don't worry, it's not to bad. Your dentist hygienist should only do one side of your mouth at a time so your whole mouth won't be numb at once. Your teeth feel so much nicer afterwards. Goodluck, I'm actually having it done again next month.

It is the easiest task that a dentist do and in 99.99% of patients they dont use numbing!! it has two methods to do scaling and rootplaning first by Cavitron and second with periodontal instruments both are so easy and dont cause much pain maybe just some sensitivity at your teeth and gums but dont worry it is nothing important ...

What you are going for is , deep cleaning of the gums. You have calculus on your root surface, you will be nunb on either your left or right side, Then we use a cavitron, its an instrument that vibrates with water to remove the hard rock on your teeth. Your gums im sure bleed very easy..thats because the gum does not attach it self to the calculus, and makes pockets, and pulls away from the tooth. When removed..(the calculus)..your gums will have a chance to heal and hopefully be back to normal--with pocket depths of like 2-3 mm. hope this helps..

Most patients DO get numb for this procedure. Since it's a deper cleaning it can be a little more uncomfortable than a regular cleaning (prophylaxis). Most dentists/hygienists don't like to numb up your entire mouth, and do quadrant or half of your mouth at a time. Lot's of people have this done and go back to work after, so other than being numb it's not bad.
Ask for instructions on what to do after.
Brush and floss daily and go for regular cleanings and you may never have to repeat the procedure. Good Luck!
