Bad Breath????!

Question: This is a bit personal but my 15 year old daughter has really bad breath all the time, It's so uncomfortable because she deosn't feel it and it's hard telling her to about it all the time. She deos brush her teeth a couple times a day but that doesn't seem to help much. I told her dentist about it and he told her to brush the back of her tongue becasuse alot of bacteria gows there. Even that hasn't helped much. I know that their is a special tongue brush wich I plan on getting her but I just would like to know if this happens to anyone out there and how they have treated it.

Tongue scrapers are great. Please go and get her one. Another thing you can have he do is use mouthwash after using the tongue scraper. The tongue scraper will loosen the plaque and food particals and the mouth wash will flush it away. I would use listerine. Another question you need to ask her is.....does she sleep with her mouth open. When you sleep with your mouth open, bacteria colinizes in the mouth. Then the mouth dries out and it causes an oder.
Unfortunatally, there isn't much you can do if she sleeps with her mouth open.

I have heard that sometimes bad breath can be an issue which is more than just in the mouth. It can be the result of sickness or infection in the throat. So maybe a trip to the doctor to make sure there's nothing else wrong would be a good idea? Also, maybe its related to diet? Might be worth considering. Eating a lot of sugary foods can create bad breath, not to mention the usual foods like garlic etc. So be carfeul that if you encourage her to chew gum, that it's sugar free. Maybe you could get her into a routine, like teeth brushing after every meal, using mouthwash to kill any germs or bacteria, and either minty gum or breathspray. It must be difficult for both you and her to address this issue and I'm sure she must be embaressed about it, so helping her out is the best thing you can do!

If that were my daughter, I would get an opinion from another dentist. I would also mention it to her pediatrician, There are dental reasons that cause halitosis, but other medical issues do as well. If she has great oral hygiene and it persists, I would err on the side of caution and have it checked out further.

From what you wrote, there are several things that I can think of that might be causing your daughter bad breath.

1. not brushing thoroughly
2. not brushing back of tongue
3. not flossing
4. might be the tonsils

I brush my teeth with salt every now and then to kill bacteria and to keep my teeth strong. I floss 2 times a day to prevent bacteria build-up.

You can tell your daughter to try to rinse her mouth with salt after brushing.

Anyone regardless of age is subjected to foul breath of halitosis which is caused by bad bacteria that stay in the mouth and create plaque. A good remedy for bad breath is an all-natural antibacterial mouthwash and not a chemical based one. It effectively kills bacteria without any effects to your mouth and teeth. OraMD is the good example.
