Geographic tongue is usually a life long genetic thing. It is a normal variance. Many people have it, including my husband. It is a genetic difference where there is no papillae on certain areas of the tongue, and it changes periodically, thus it is called geographic b/c its geography changes. The only side effects is it can become irritated with spicy/sour things. Occasionally, people can develop this temporarily.
No worries at all. It is not harmful.
I know how you feel, my tongue travels the world while I am stuck home working!!! I think your tongue will get a plane home soon, don't worry about it.
I have had geographic tongue most of my life, so I wouldn't worry that you have had it this long.
