Do I get a root canal or extraction tomorrow?!

Question: Im going to the dentist tomorrow and not sure whether to go for an extraction of the tooth or a root canal. The tooth is the one next to the wisdom tooth. It is broken off a bit, and that is why i got an abscess developed a few days ago. Also which method is more likely to not get infected.

If I have the tooth taken out how long does it take to heal over and do you have any tips to keep it from keeping it clean and not getting it infected.

I would get an extraction. Root canals are horrendously expensive, and usually take more than one visit. On the up side though, they rarely hurt.

I grind my teeth, so I've cracked a couple in half and had to get them pulled. I didn't feel a thing.

It took about a week to heal to the point where I wasn't thinking about it all the time. I swished *gently* with salt water while it was healing. One thing to really remember: don't use drinking straws after you get a tooth pulled. The suction will open up the wound again. You have to watch that for about 2 weeks or so.

I'm not a dentist, but you should just get it pulled. Root canals are very extensive and sometimes painful and they take forever. I've never gotten a tooth pulled, but my friend has and she said she couldn't even feel it.

A root canal is expensive and requires several visits. It also can be painful - I have had several! You already have an infection - that's was the abscess is. I would go for an extraction as it is at the back and no-one will see it. You won't feel a thing.

You should always try to save your teeth nothing is as good as your own teeth. A root canaled tooth, as long as you have it crowned after (root canaled teeth need to be crowned because they become dry/brittle and susceptible to fracture) and you have good homecare should not ever get infected again. Root canals are not as bad as people say. You should have enought anesthetic so you are comfortable. They can be done in one appointment and even the crown, if your dentist has the equipment, can be done the same day. If it shouldn't take any longer than 30 minutes at the most to do the root canal.
An extracted tooth obviously will never get re-infected. It takes about 4 to 6 months for the bone to heal enough to place an implant. A bridge can be placed right away but for ideal esthetic you should wait at least 4 to 6 weeks for the tissue to heal so you don't end up with a large space catching food.
The cost of a root canal and crown is about $2000. less than an implant or bridge.
If you do not replace this tooth than your teeth will shift and your entire bite with change. This can result in headaches, muscle soreness, tired jaw, neckaches and may make you start to grind your teeth, (your bodies way of trying to correct your incorrect bite).
If it was my mouth I would get the root canal. "Save the tooth!"
