Can you have receding gums and no gum disese?!

Question:

Can you have receding gums and no gum disese?

Answers:

Yes, you can have gum recession without active gum disease. Gum recession itself is a condition, not a disease. The 2 most common causes for recession are aggressive brushing or teeth grinding. Age, gender, and race are not adetermining factors. When you brush the teeth, especially along the gum line, with excessive force and a hard tooth brush, the gum is traumatized and pull up. For people who grinds the teeth at night, the teeth will receive a lot of lateral pressure and movement. This is enough to irritate the thin gum line and cause the gum to recede. Other less common contributing factors for gum recession include orthodonitc treatment, smoking, poor oral hygiene and poor nutrition. When the gum is receded, they will not grow back. In some severe cases, pt might requires gum grafting in other to cover the exposed root surface. In order to prvent gum recession, use a extra soft tooth brush and brush with very light pressure in a circular motion along the gum line. Just think of it as a massage to the gum line. It is enough to remove the plaque without traumatizing the gum. For people who have difficulty brushing light ( too many muscles!), try a Sonicare tooth brush. Also take plenty of Vitamin C which is the building blocking for strong and healthy gum. Good luck.
