Do retainers hurt?!

Question: Basically, I'm going to get my braces off in march and then my orthodontist will give me a retainer. Does it hurt at all? More than braces? To be honest, my braces did not hurt that much it was just uncormfortable.

My friend who used to have retainers says that they were really tight and they hurt. Is this true?

Thanks x

Hey sweety, no retainers do not hurt. They're not as much pain as having braces because braces they cut your skin in your mouth and makes your mouth sore and all that stuff. Retainers are uncomfortable when it comes to talking, that's all. Your friend's retainers shouldn't be tight and shouldn't cause it to hurt. The only reason why it should hurt is if she hasn't worn them in a while and then wore it again.. then that will hurt. Other then that, if you get your retainers.. make sure that they're not too tight and if they are, tell your dentist.

- It takes about a week or so to get use to it.
- When you brush your teeth, take it out and rinse it before you put it back on.
- When you eat, make sure to put your retainers in the box ( They're going to give you a box to put your retainers in ). Those are the only time you should take your retainers out.

Don't worry too much about it. It's not bad at all. And your dentist will go over all the information you want to know with you so relax :)

they can if you don't wear them. If you don't wear them, then you teeth move. When you put them back on, the retainers push the teeth back...which causes pain

it will be tight at first but it will quickly pass, u will be used to it literally within a few hours

they do at first...but after you get used to them there not so much hurting..just annoying...

Only if you stop wearing them for a couple days and then put them back in, then they will hurt.

no, no not at all. It is a little uncomfortable when they first put it in, but after a day or two you get used to it.

The only time it sort of hurts is when you don't wear them for a couple of days (which you shouldn't do, but I always did) and then when you put them back in it feels very tight around the teeth. That feeling goes after a few minutes though.

they are tight and for some people it really does hurt

No...I have one and it doesnt hurt at all. Sure if you dont wear it for a couple of days then put it in it can feel uncomfortable but i wouldnt say its pain.

It will get a few days to get used to it. It makes you lisp when you talk at first LOL! And dribble a bit but you learn to manage it! Haha..

Yes it out when you brush your teeth. Sometimes you have to eat in them but your dentist will advise you about this =)

Mine didn't, because they're after your braces, i don't think it will be that tight - just to make sure they stay straight.
hope this helps =]

They only hurt if you go extended periods without wearing them - otherwise if you wear them consistently, you should be able to be quite comfortable in them after a while and then perhaps move on to only wearing them at nights and then only a few hours at a time.

I myself am supposed to wear retainers but I went six months without them and just started back because my teeth have moved drastically. Not sure if wearing them will fix it - I'll have to go to a dentist. But right now, going so long not wearing them, it hurts like the dickens, especially the first few days.

So play it safe and wear them all the time until your dentist tells you it's okay to go a few hours or even a night without them. Don't take them out like I did just so you won't talk funny or be stared at. :D believe me, you'll be stared at more with bad teeth OR the face you wear because your teeth hurt so much!

I actually just got my retainer this morning.. about three hours ago and let me tell you it is fairly tight. My teeth are starting to ache and my orthodontist told me to wear them 24/7 for 3 months and then I can start to wear them just at night.. I took them out to eat not to long ago and my teeth were so sore I couldn't eat.. the back teeth aren't as bad as the front ones. Its kind of like that feeling after you get your braces tightened and your teeth are all sore.. except not as bad. I would say to take some pain killers to ease the pain.. I personally hate taking any kind of medicine.. so I just deal with the pain lol.
and you are supposed to take it out when you eat but just put it right back in when you are done. my orthodontist told me to brush my retainer.. you will probably get instructions with your retainers when you get them. hope I helped. :)
