Tooth extraction.?!

Question: Is there any way that a tooth can be extracted under general anesthetic that doesn't involve an injection?

I am mortally afraid of needles/injections and would not be able to cope under local anesthetic.

When i was younger i had some gas that knocked me out because i was so scarred of injections, do they still do that now?

Thanks guys! x

Yes. You can ask to have it done under general anaesthetic or sedation. I had one done last week under sedation.
I personally prefer sedation as its supposed to be safer. The doctor actually advises you that you will be awake and be able to respond to requests such as open wide etc but I have no recollection at all. After they've given you the sedation they will inject you in the mouth but you wont feel it or remember it. Good luck.

It was intravenous sedation. They put a catheter in the back of your hand and adminster the sedation medicine through there.

I had a big tooth at the back of my mouth extracted last month.

I don't like needles either and the dentist wiped the inside of my mouth with what looked like a piece of cotton wool and it tasted like bubble gum. This numbed the inside of my mouth a little so that when I was given the injections for extraction I didn't feel them at all.

They don't like giving general anaesthetics.

I dont know if they do gas anymore. Why dont you ask for the jab in the arm. Although your still getting an injection at least you will be asleep when he yanks it out. Never liked dentists myself either

I HATE NEEDLES!! If I were you, I'd just take the needle. Would you rather 4 seconds of pain from the needle, or 3minuites of pain from them trying to rip out your tooth? Plus, the gas they give you gets you high, and if you stay really still while your on it it feels like your floating and spinning and stuff.

Early experience can be devastating.Techniques have improved so much that extraction can be much more comfortable.Explain your fears to your dentist well in advance and he will set your mind at ease.

My oral surgeon offered me the option of gas sedation or intravenous.

I don't mind needles, so I went for the IV. The nurse putting mine in was AMAZING. I expected it to pinch but she had that needle in place painlessly. If I hadn't been watching, I'd have never known it happened at all. Less than two minutes later the last thing I remember was being asked "Are you feeling it?" and being able to grunt an answer before I was out. I didn't even end up with more than a tiny mark from the needle.

Talk with your surgeon about your sedation options. They will be able to tell you what is best for your particular situation and give you advice on how things tend to go in their office.

I was terrified of being put under, but knew I couldnt stand a couple of hours of being awake for wisdom tooth extraction/gum trimming. I'm a body control person and couldnt stand being awake and helpless in the chair, but I certainly didn't like the idea of unconciousness much better. Turns out being sedated saved me being aware of the whole experience.

If you're going in for a lengthy procedure or don't like local injections (which I also hate since I've never had them done well) sedation is definately worth one little needle stick. If your nurse is talented enough and they have you look away from the arm being used, you won't even know you've been injected until you fall asleep.

Gas is no longer used, but being injected, is no big deal today, you will not even feel the injection, a numbness will ensue, you will not feel the tooth being extracted. and hay presto, tooth ache is in the passed.

you'll be pleased afterwards.

I had a conscious sedation a few months ago to extract four wisdom teeth. i didn't get any anaesthetic in my mouth whilst i was conscious. They put the I.V. in the back of my hand (i had gas prior to that) and then suddenly i felt very groggy, then i was out for an hour.
i hate needles in the mouth too, ask about conscious sedation. it's not painful and they don't have to put needles in your mouth, but it's a more expensive option. are you seeing an oral surgeon or a regular dentist?
