I think what you want to know if a root canal is as horrid as it sounds. It's not! It's a procedure where the root of the tooth is damaged and the dentist fixes it! It requires a shot of Novocaine and an hour or so of your time.. not a big deal. Don't worry about it until you have a really really bad tooth ache that just sort of comes out of nowhere. Trust your dentist to know what to do..that's what he went to school for! ?
Treatment of pain is the number one reason root canals are performed. You didn't say why your are worried you might need a root canal.

You will need one if you ever get a crown. I got crowns and no root canal and later they had to remove the crowns and drilled. Big money drain.
you can never know that.. only a dentist can!!! even a dentist will never know until they opened the tooth and see for themselves the problem. they usually do panoramic xray to see hidden problems..
