Can not wait to get Braces! I am geting them on June 22 and can't wait.?!

Question:

Can not wait to get Braces! I am geting them on June 22 and can't wait.?

Let's have a discussion about braces! Write down whatever you want about braces. Talk about the process of geting them put on or the best colors to get. Or how you could not wait to get them put on your teet.
I am just trying to keep myself occupied before I get braces put on but I just can't wait.
I tried to pass time by looking at the different stories and questions people had about geting braces on and even asked a couple myself:
Such as "What color should I get?"
I just wonder is it really painful to have braces on your mouth. Well I just can't wait to get them put on. Just have to keep myself busy.
I deceided that if my ortho offers different colors for braces I am gonna get blue and green (do you think that is a nice color to get)
Also I am going to have braces on the top and bottom of my mouth for 3 years. But the bummer part is that I am going to have to have to wear a headgear.
Is having to wear a headgear a nunsiance?
Well i guess that is all that I have to write!

I’ve never gotten braces myself for I never had the need for them but I know some people that have gone through the whole “braces” experience one being a cousin of mine. I was there when she had them put on. To most of her up keeping appointments as well and I was even there on the day she had them removed.

She wasn’t so panicky, my cousin that is, when it came to the first stage of her braces, getting them put on. Actually, she was very much like your self. She was excited, if you will during that phase in time. However, the night before she had her braces removed I vividly recall her telling me about a horrible nightmare she had where she had dreamt that her top teeth had been pulled so far out they were almost horizontal in show, and there were huge gaps between the other teeth along side of them. She was so freaked out by the dream that it contemplated calling to cancel her removal of her braces appointment that day. I somehow talked her out of it.

Anyhow, the day she had her braces put on she some sort of X-ray taken. Two of them actually, two different types of X-rays taken in which she had never had one of either of them taken before. She told me later that when the dentist showed her the results to her X-rays she couldn’t tell what was normal and what wasn’t and we both laughed at that thought.

After the X-rays she had a wire removed from her mouth and I would imagine that her teeth felt strangely loose after that. Then she had cheek retractors put in and her teeth which prepared her for the brackets. From there we waited for the orthodontic to come into the room which was a long wait and when he did he positioned the brackets to where they got bonded to her teeth and if I can remember correctly she got the clear Clarity ceramic brackets. They also put two bands around her back molars and that was that besides the rinsing of her mouth and getting the check out her new braces in a mirror. Without the ligs in place mind you, for the dental assistant did that.

The orthodontic didn’t even say much to my cousin just that her teeth would continue to improve from here on out.

Ummm…. where was I? Oh yeah, the ligs. The dental assistant gave my cousin the choice of clear or this white/opalescent color. She said told her that the opal ones seemed to stay whiter and stain less. So my cousin went with that her first time around with the choice of ligs colors. She really didn’t say much about the opal ligs but everyone was commenting on how much they made her teeth look super. She also had to use a wire tie on one of my bottom teeth because it was turned to the side and they needed to exert more force on it.

All in all, the visit was supposed to be like forty minutes but took two hours and right after her appointment my cousin was starving and I was like, “You just came from the dentist. Your teeth are all nice and clean and set. Can you just wait an hour then we’ll get some food?” And my cousin was all like, “No!” So, we went to some fast food joint were she suffocated her braces with a burger and fries.

She felt weird eating with braces on the top and the bottom of her teeth. One of the very front brackets even started scratching her lip and which produced a sore.

For the remaining week or so she was complaining that her teeth didn’t feel so great. That they hurt like “hell,” as she put it. It was mostly her molars on the right where the top and bottom where hitting together when she bit down. She took lots of ibuprofen but she still complained that her mouth still throbbed.

As the weeks went on I found my cousin not closing her mouth all the way, and just leaving her teeth apart a tiny bit. She said it was more comfortable that way. Also, it’s amazing to see when I went to most of her dental appointments it was amazing to see how crooked teeth look when the wire goes on. The process of that and the full effect of teeth jagged just blew my mind.

Ummm… so, what I’ve seen when it comes to braces you probably will experience some discomfort or difficulty speaking or eating at first. My cousin could talk fine but I’ve had a couple of friends who got braces and couldn’t talk. All they got out of their mouths were muffles and one of them even spit when she tried talking with her brand new braces. I had to use an umbrella whenever I was around her. That’s how bad it was.

While wearing braces, keep your teeth and brackets clean. If you wear cemented, non-removable braces, the ones my cousin got put in food and plaque seem to get trapped between her teeth and gums. So, she followed a regimen of brushing, flossing and rinsing, and reduced her consumption of sweets and carbohydrates. It also helped to reduce the risk of cavities which would be a nuisance to attend to with braces in your mouth.

My cousin also had to avoid certain foods that can damage or dislodge her braces. Hard foods such as candy, raw carrots, corn on the cob, pretzels, nuts, popcorn and crushed ice were off limits. Sticky foods as well, like caramel, taffy and gum. These foods can get stuck between teeth and gums or bend wires and knock bands or brackets loose.

What else? What else? *tries to thinks* Oh yeah, when she got the braces removed there was scratches on her teeth but they came off after two weeks of good brushing.

Don’t know much about headgears. I have never seen anyone wear one of those a retainer, yes but not a headgear, no which was strange because my cousin was heavy into sports and headgears are like seatbelts save her from a fall or something. *shrugs* I don’t know.

paaatches –Happy Braces Receiving and Obtaining! I will be thinking of you on June 22nd, 2007. Me: I wonder if Andrew got his braces, yet? I wonder if Andrew is getting his braces right, now? Yeah, something like that. Anyhow, with the choice of colors there my cousin got a pick of them all. Orange was a choice. Can you believe that, orange? Now that’s disgusting, orange. However, I will say that I liked the dark colors on her. The blues, green, red which made her look like a Dracula cause her skin tone is dark and all you see if this red line going across her mouth her time she spoke. The pinks and yellows and so on didn’t cut it for my cousin made her look like a kindergartener. I say when it comes to color choice go with your expression. Go with the way you express yourself, who you are. If you like pretty pink lipsticks and your stuffed bunnies then get pink. Go with what moves you.
