Can teeth be reshaped?!

Question:

Can teeth be reshaped?

I am in the process of getting braces. I have large teeth in a medium sized mouth (thats what my dentist says). I would love to get my 2 front teeth reshaped to somewhat of a square shape and to reduce the length (after braces of course). Have any of you had it done? Is it worth it? What are the cons?

Answers:

Hi my name is Jeffery M Salerno DDS

Yes after orthodontic treatment teeth can be slightly reshaped to de-emphasize length or width.

The risks are tooth sensitivity, and some discoloration. Once the enamel ,which is predominately white, is removed to the underlying dentin can show through which is more yellow in color. This may increase tooth sensitivity to cold as well.

I have done man of these reshaping with out ill effect. I would consult with you dentist prior to reshaping

Another alternative is veneers or do reshaping with bonding and bleaching.
