Anyone had their wisdom teeth extracted while awake?!

Question: Hey everyone, I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled in a couple of weeks. My dental office doesn't put their patients to sleep, and I'd have to wait for AT LEAST another 4-6 weeks if I were to wait for an appointment with an office that does. I just want it over with.

So, what I want to know is, what's it like to get your wisdom teeth removed while you're awake? What's the pain like after ward? Will I feel anything while I'm awake?

Also, if you can answer this one, please do: I got my tongue pierced a couple of years ago... will it be that level of pain? Worse, better?

By the way, all four of them are impacted.

Thanks is advance for the input!!!

Call your dentist and tell them you are concerned - ask if they will prescribe some Valium for you to take orally before you come in. You won't be able to drive home, but you'll be pleasantly unaware of the procedure without being "put out".

We sedate the crap out of patients in my office using Valium verses IV sedation and everyone loves it.

If your dentist doesn't want to write a script for you, get your medical doctor to do it.

Minimal discomfort, take some Advil/Tylenol and whatever narcotics they give you.

nope never happened.

I had pain shots in my gums plus the gas, it just felt like a lot of pressure but I could hear it, that freaked me out worse than anything. It did hurt quite a bit afterward.

The procedure to remove them while awake involves a lot of nerve inhibitors. You will feel the pressure in your mouth of the surgeons instruments and the removal of the wisdom teeth, but you will not feel any real pain.

After the inhibitors wear off, as with anyone that gets their wisdom teeth removed, you'll feel the same pains that everyone feels.

I had my teeth pulled under nitrous oxide and it was fine. But since your teeth are impacted, you might want to be out!

the tongue piercing has nothing to do with it... it doesnt hurt that bad, they give you pain killers after.

I did when I was 15. It feels like any other tooth getting pulled (I also had baby teeth pulled when I was younger). You will be numb and you won't feel anything. Pain was tolerable afterwards and I didn't have stitches either. It's just a day of suckiness, then you will be fine. Just get it over with.

I had all four of mine taken out, no big deal.

hurts a lot. well that from my experience. near teen have lots of nerves cells

I just had Novocaine. No pain, just pressure. Not too much discomfort afterward.

It is not that bad to have your wisdom teeth extracted with just local anesthesia. I had all four of mine, two were impacted, extracted with just local anesthesia. I didn't feel anything during the process, except the back of my head getting pressed against the chair.

I drove myself home, took the pain medication and have lived to tell the story.

Get it done sooner rather than later. No need for a general anesthesia (getting knocked out.)

I had my teeth done without being put out. They deadened me. You will feel pressure. Do not get scared unless you feel pain and then let the Dr know immediately. It is safer to not be out under.

i had two bottom wisdom teeth pulled awake. my friend 2 weeks earlier had 4 wisdom teeth extracted awake.
it took us both only about 20 minutes! you will feel no pain. afterwards is the same as though u wernt asleep. ppl react differently. i was swollen for about a week, my friend didnt get any!
its not a major operation. so goodluck!

it shouldn't hurt if your dentist gives a good anesthetic block. but it may feel uncomfortable because your will feel pulling and pressure. it will be achy to uncomfortable afterward, but try to stay ahead of the pain with whatever analgesic you are told to take. and there will be swelling. but in 2-3 days you should be fine. if you pierced your tongue, you should breeze through this.

When your awake, it hurts like hell even when they numb it. The pain afterward well it hurts pretty bad like for a day or two. You will feel it I had 3 takin out.

This all depends on your age. If you are older, like maybe 40 or up, your teeth will be rooted deeper. If they get in there and the roots are hard to get out they will cut and dig them out and it is very very painful. Will take a long time to heal.
If you are young and the teeth are easy to pull, it's no big deal at all and the recovery is very quick and not painful. One thing I would suggest is for the dentist to get a panoramic x-ray so he can tell if it will be an easy removal.

Some dentist like to get you in that chair and do it theirself for more money rather then to refer you on to someone who can put you out. If I were you, I would seriously consider using some kind of sleep dentistry if they think it might be a concern, and also because they are all impacted. In the long run you will be glad you did. Good luck with it all and let us know how it goes.

I had mine removed while awake since that is the only way I could get them done. Going elsewhere wasn't even an option at the time. I was 17 at the time so it will probably be a different experience if you are older.

What they did to me is numb the areas. WIth me, they used Novocaine on either long q-tips or gauze so there was no pain involved. I would have protested loudly if they used needles. Then they went in and removed the teeth. You don't feel anything at all.

In my situation, I ended up swallowing one because it landed at the back of my tongue which was also numb. Of course none of the staff believed me. I don't recall having much pain though, then again it was several years ago. It was definitely achey. I was given a prescription for horsepills but I couldn't get my mouth open wide enough (not to mention, at that time I had enough trouble swallowing regular pills, nevermind anything so huge) so my grandma had to call in and yell at them to give me a liquid painkiller (Tylenol with Codeine) but as soon as I took it, I was out like a light.

For a week, I couldn't eat anything more solid than jello or pudding, and most of those days I was drinking hot liquid jello.

I actually had my 4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled today. My oral surgeon would not do it unless I was put to sleep. My insurance would not pay for the anesthesia as they will only pay for it if you are in a hospital, so the extra $$ was out of pocket. But well worth it.

From what I have heard and what my oral surgeon told me, DO NOT do it with just Novocain. The procedure itself will be horrible as they have to take the teeth out in chunks, and the pain later will be much worse.

They just put me to sleep and 1 hr later it was all over. I am spitting up blood but am still numb. So no pain YET! I have been using ice and have vicodin for later when the pain sets in.

I would wait and get put to sleep. Especially if your insurance will pay for it. Also do it on a Friday so you have the weekend to recuperate.

yep,I had them removed while awake,if the dentist does his job right, the most you should feel is some pressure.the pain afterward was minimal in my case,i only needed tylenol to ease it,but everyone is different.dont smoke,or eat hard foods etc.
