Freckle on gums?!

Question: I have a brown discoloration spot on my gums. The alarmed me because it looks kind of gross. When I went to the doctor, he explained it was a freckle on my gums. This only developed in the last 6 months. Has anyone else experienced this or do you know what causes it?

People of Meditarianian, East Indian, African, and Middle Eastern heritage can have freckles. Caucasians generally don't, but can have freckles and moles in their mouth, though it's not common. Since you say it showed up in the last 6 months, you'll want to get it measured (seeing the dentist would be great. Insist on a measurement). If it appears to grown in diameter AT ALL then get it removed immediately. All pigmented spots in the mouth should raise suspicion with dentists. Unfortunately, many dentists can be oblivious to the soft tissues of the mouth. Be proactive!!

If you are not caucasian, this is common. However, this is not common in white people. It could actually be buildup beneath the gumline that needs to be removed or it could just be normal pigmentation. Make sure your cleaning is up to date with a dental hygienist. If it has a gray tint to it, it can be caused by silver fills or crowns.
