When I first got my braces, they hurt a lot !!
I don't mean to scare you, they are just uncomfortable and hurt / are tender when you eat.
therefore, I would stick with soft foods - like soup, icecream, jello, mashed potatos, etc?
for a while until your teeth adjust to the foreign objects!
I went to school after I got them on, but I ate lunch at home before just going in the afternoon.. :)
You could take advil or tylenol for pain relief - the advil worked wonders for me!!
Don't be scared, they're really not that bad!! You get so used to them that it hardly feels like they're there.
Just be sure to follow all the orthodontist's recommendations for maintaining good hygenic teeth - ex. no popcorn, hard candy, brush well!, etc.!
good luck hun.

nope, but they sure hurt a couple hours later!

They make your gums sore. When your teeth move they are very painful. But in the end your teeth look great. It is worth it.

It doesn't hurt when you get them put on. But it does hurt when they tighten them up. I had mine about 20 years ago and I think they tightened them up about every 2 months. I had them on for about a year.

PS. It was totally worth it :)

nuh uh.
i was so happy when i got mine off...even if it DID hurt, i wouldnt care. and neither should you!! but dont worry. it wont hurt.

Hi, I am getting braces too! My friends had them, and they said it doesn't hurt to get them on but it may hurt a little to tighten them. I would suggest you ask your orthadontest what it will be like before they put them on. She or he can explain to you the process.

Good luck!

yeah, they kind of hurt but trust me, it's not a unbearable pain. it's more of a lot of pressure. they just "glue" little metal things to each tooth and then run a single wire on the top and bottom. and hold the wire in place with rubber bands. ibuprofin worked the best for me.

The old technique is to glue small anchors to your teeth and then tighten wires around them around your mouth.

The new tehnique is invisalign, which is suposed to be well consealed.

Yes they hurt alot in the first 3 weeks. Lets just say that the slightest of touch on your teeth will bring imidiate tears to your eyes. It feels OK after the initial 3 weeks, until you get them tightened again.

they irritate at first its like u've been eating salt all day and ur mouth feels sore, ur gums will hurt but u'll get used to it quickly!

some people feel some discomfort after they got their braces on. your teeth will feel tighter, i didnt have pain that was unbearable. they will give you wax to put on your braces so that your gums wont bleed but personally i tried not to use it because your gums will adjust to them, it just will take time.

you def can go to school after, you will still be able to talk. it might feel weird and tight when trying to eat.

they pretty much cement them onto your teeth. that doesnt hurt unless you have someone who is a little careless.

you can use any pain reliever, Advil, Tylenol anything that works for you.

i had braces for 5 years, you go once a month every few months, that all depends how much moving your teeth need to do to get them tightened, which to me was never painful just like i said before tight feeling. dont worry about it....its worth it!!

anymore questions send them my way, like i said i had them for 5 years!!

oh and each time you get them tightened they put on a new wire, and should ask you if you feel anything poking. put your tongue to the back of your mouth where the wire ends...if you feel anything poking TELL THEM because thats when it hurts the wire will cut up your gum....not fun. so just make sure you are honest when you are there with them.

They hurt when you first get them on for a few days. They use epoxy (a type of glue) to attach the brackets and put rings around the back teeth then run wires between them. I would take advil--it helps with the swelling in your gums as well. See how you feel after you get them and then decide if you want to go to school. And get some wax to rub over the brackets--it cuts down on the sores inside your mouth! Good luck--it's totally worth it!

Well, when I had them, it was some sort of cement that attached them to your teeth. It's going to hurt a bit, but if you take tylenol or advil 30 minutes before you go, it will help - ask your parents which one is right for you. You will be able to go to school afterwards, but you'll probably want to eat soft foods for a day or two after you get them on and for a couple days each time you get them tightened.

I had a severe overbite and wore braces for nearly four years - and had a tightening about once a month. You'll find that it is totally worth any pain you have.

Don't be scared to death - it will be ok!

the put them on with some sort of glue.
you can go to school the day after
you can probably take some asprin or tylonol
don't be scare...it does hurt a bit, but its because you are moving your teeth into place

dont' worry. youll be fine!

YEAH THEY HURT FOR A LITTLE WHILE AFTER YOU GET THEM. YOU CAN TAKE MOTRIN OR TYENOL FOR THE PAIN. IT'S GOING TO HURT A LITTLE AFTER EACH TIGHTEN, BECAUSE IT'S PULLING YOUR TEETH TOGETHER. THE FIRST TIME IS THE HARDEST, BUT AFTER A FEW VISIT YOU'LL GET USE TO IT.
GOOD LUCK!

When I got my braces they put like little metal pieces on your teeth then they put wire through it, but that's what hurts is when they tighten it but nothing bad. It's a little uncomfortable thats all.

They spread your lips apart, dry off your teeth and cement (not street cement lol) the brackets on. Yes, They do hurt... they wont hurt too bad after about 5 days. Be sure to have lots of yogurt, juice and chicken broth around because I guaruntee that you WILL NOT WANT solid food AT ALL. believe me, I'm 13... I know things! lol. You should take Advil or Tylenol depending on which one you usually use. Take 2 or 3. Do not overdose though. Yes, go to school but like I said, take plenty of yogurt! Good luck! And, one more thing, it will hurt really bad for the first five days to brush your teeth, but do it.... its TOTALLY worth it. Again, good luck!

they use a type of glue.
you can go to school, (my daughter insisted on going)
she used aleive or ibuprofen( remember you gotta eat if taking those meds tho, as not to upset your stomach)
any pain is worth it! just think of the beautiful smile you have in a couple of years!!! :)

Okay, I've had braces before, and I kno it ALL.

When i got my braces, they used a special type of dental glue to put them on, and they dry it really fast with this light thing. It will taste funny for a few minutes, but it'll go away.

I think its fine to go to school after you get them on... just make sure you eat something soft for lunch because your teeth will be sore.

I usually took tylenol, at least that's what my dentist reccomened to me, but you could take pretty much any pain reliever you usually take.

Don't freak out, braces aren't so bad. And remember if you have any questions, just ask your orthodontist. He/She will help you out.

Initially it will hurt when the anesthetics wear off and after each time its tightened more - but pain wears off eventually, no need to take painkillers - use numbing gel (can't remember the proper name but its like a weak anesthetic gel) which should be provided by the dentist. Going to school should be fine unless otherwise advised :)

yes. im sorry to say that they do. my brother had them for 2 1/2 years and he did not like them. they also had to be tightened, and he said sometimes he felt as though his teeth were going to split apart.

i bet it is very uncomfortable!

they glue little metal square things on your teeth then hook a wire through them secure the wire then tighten it-not painful at all, i didnt feel a thing! you can go to school because the only pain you feel is a dull ache in your gums. i took normal painkillers and was fine, it is different for each person though. in most cases you can choose a colour which is on little rubber bands around the metal thing. it wont stick out that much in your mouth these things are tiny. you will soon get used to them, and remember its for the best and you will have a brilliant set of teeth when they come off!! dont worry about it!!

Dont worry about that,- worry about the tightning thats going to be happening alot.

Don't be scared. They will be a little sore when you get them on just because they will put pressure on your teeth..after all, they are moving..slowly. It will hurt a little bit to eat hard foods, but after a day or so it will go away. Every time you go in to get them adjusted they will feel sensitive too. When i got them in i conned my mom into letting me eat ice cream for dinner =)

it is usually your gums that are sore . and you can have a tight feeling . but not to bad

Your mouth will be pretty tender for the first few days. When I was in HS, I had them, I did not go to school, but I could have.

I spent about 3 days eating only soft foods ie.) Yogurt, pudding, soups, ice cream, popsicles, pastas, mashed potatoes, softer meats (deli cuts) and soft bread etc.

Ibuprofen (Advil or MotrinIB) is a sufficient pain reliever, if either of those upset your stomach, acetaminophen is also adequate, with out the irritation to your stomach (Tylenol.) Also, you'll want to pick up a thing of Anbesol (for braces if your pharmacy carries it) It will help soothe the irritation on the inside of your lips and also your tender gums.

Don't worry too much! The pain is really not that bad!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU & BEST WISHES!

You are SO LUCKY. I am getting my braces Feb. 12. My friend that had braces says that the dentist will give you a list of foods u can't eat, but you can't eat gum. That's it. She also said it hurts a couple of days later and for about a week.
