Is it worth me paying for white fillings or sticking with the cheaper black ones!

Question:

Is it worth me paying for white fillings or sticking with the cheaper black ones and why?

Answers:

My wife used to work at a dental office. The white fillings (composites) are better for your teeth. The silver fillings (amalgams) are not good for your teeth and scientists are researching the possibility that the mercury in the silver fillings can lead to cancer, birth defects, and autism. The amalgam fillings do not bond to the teeth very well and you may end up needing to get them replaced because decay can develop underneath the filling. My wife has seen many patients have their fillings replaced for this reason. Some of them even had to have crowns put on the tooth because the decay underneath the filling was so bad it could have led to a root canal if another filling was done. It's okay for kids to have the amalgam fillings if the cavity is on a baby tooth that will eventually fall out. Dental insurance will cover the fillings up to the cost of the amalgam and you pay the difference for the composite. If you have good dental insurance the cost is not that much depending on how many surfaces of the tooth the cavity covers. We've paid under $40 for our composite fillings. You should even have any existing amalgam fillings replaced with composite. Bottom line: If you can afford the composite fillings, get them.
