Partial dentures or implants and bankruptcy ?What would you do?!

Question:

Partial dentures or implants and bankruptcy ?What would you do?

I am 36 and very depressed. I need to make a decision on whether to put a partial denture or many implants that would bankrupt my family (5 implants down , 5 implants up ) . I had 4 bridges &crowns and the dentist said they were poorly made which resulted in cavities&decay under the bridges . I lost all my good teeth under the bridges and need extraction or root canal but since 2 of them are infected,is not even sure I should do a root canal or just extract them.I need at least 10 implants or a partial down, one up. The implants would be about 25 000 $ at the dental school and much more expensive at a regular dentist. How much cheaper would be an implant supported denture ? If you have experience with regular denture,is it true that it results in bone loss? And do they look natural, are they stable? What would you do in my situation?

Answers:

Implants are top-notch best way to go....if you can afford it, it is not worth putting your family in crisis and dentures can work just fine . Yes, dentures can be aesthetically pleasing, but make sure you convey to your dentist that you want them to look as natural as possible. The lower denture is going to be your biggest burden and that is where you would want a couple implants to attach the denture to if possible. Lower dentures just rest on the ridge, no retention value and the tongue is constantly trying to lift them out. Upper dentures rarely have a difficult time with retention because they not only stick well to the palate, the tongue isn't in the way either. Usually the ridge on the upper is pretty good and if the dentures are made well you can be very happy with an upper denture.
Yes, bone loss can be a problem if the Oral Surgeon needs to remove a lot of bone while taking the teeth out, and once the teeth are all extracted there is usually some shrinkage, but that will heal and dissipate within the first 6 months, after that the bone loss is more of a gradual loss.
Keep in mind if you start with dentures you can always have implants done down the road when finances may be better for you.
Good luck
