Coughing blood after dental surgery?!

Question:

Coughing blood after dental surgery?

I had 7 molars extracted yesterday morning and today when i do my normal "cough" (from being a smoker) I get a large dark bloody clot looking thing that comes up....is this normal???

Answers:

The most likely answer would be that probably during the course of your surgery (that is a lot of teeth to have extracted) you unintentionally took in blood that wasn't caught by the suction. Since you weren't intentionally swallowing, your epiglottis which blocks food/liquid from entering your trachea and subsequently your bronchial tubes and lungs may not have been shut resulting in some blood getting where you don't want it. If this happens it would be natural to cough but it depends if you were out during the surgery you probably wouldn't.
This could cause you to cough up blood. That stated however, you are a smoker and something more serious may be coming into play. You should get checked out by a doctor to be sure, especially if it persists. It just seems like too big of a coincidence to start coughing up blood right after having 7 teeth extracted... so it is likely but not certain that the 2 are related. Good luck.
