Asking for my dental xray?!

Question: Can you ask the dentist for your own dental xrays for personal reasons? He is saying that I have 6 cavities. Each one costs 110$. DO cavity fillings with resin cost this much? I have never had this many cavities in my life and I have not gone to the dentist since I had my braces off back 3 years ago. SO I want to get my own xrays and ask other dentists if I really do have 6 cavities.

As a patient, you have the right to ask for your x-rays for a second opinion. The dentist will probably have you sign a release that he is not responsible for them or their information once they have left the office. He may also charge you a fee to copy them so he has a copy for his records too. This fee is legitimate since he is required to keep his records in order.

Oh, and yes, resin fillings do cost that much.

you can ask but from my experiences i did not have any cavities . i did not go to the dentist for 5 years then when i decided to get braces i went and had 11 . just brushing every day does not do it i learned the hard way

Yes they cost that much.
Why did you wait 3 years before going to a dentist?
If you want the X-rays, ask for them. I bet you they aren't free.

you're paying for those x-rays! They belong to you! I'd insist on having them. If he won't give them up I'd be suspicious. I'll tell you a story why you can't always trust them. When I was a child I was in a foster home. The dentist at that time said I had several cavities. No one wanted to pay for this, there was arguing between the authorities and my parents as to who was liable. I never went back to that dentist. Fast forward many years to adulthood, I go for a check up on my own, Guess what? No cavities!!!! They didn't just go away on their own!

The original x-rays are the property of the dentist, but you have every right to copies of them, which you may have to pay for. $110 is actually really cheap, usually they are around $150 each. Keep in mind different dentists have different professional judgements.

Yes. You can ask for a copy of your x-ray as long as you have paid for it. Most offices don't require payment for copies, but some do. You have a legal right to any and all medical and dental reports at any time. (Sometimes for a fee.)
