I got a root canal like a year ago....?!

Question:

I got a root canal like a year ago....?

and now all of a sudden it feels like something is in my gum right in that tooth. i dont know, but my mom payed a couple thousand to get it done nice. is there a chance it can fall out? or is it just really something in my gum?

Answers:

I'm a dentist.

A root canal involves cleaning out the "inside" of a tooth and filling it with a rubber-like material coated with a sealer material that adheres to inside of the tooth. These materials typically do not "fall out" of a tooth.

One common misconception is that root canal'ed teeth cannot get decay on them. In reality, they decay every bit as easily as natural teeth, and in some cases, worse: unlike natural teeth that begin to exhibit signs of tooth decay (such as sensitivity and pain) that would compel someone to have it treated before it progresses further, root canal'ed teeth don't. Tooth decay on root canal'ed (endodontically-treated_ teeth does not typically cause symptoms until it has progressed to the point where the tooth is breaking apart.

Hence, it could be that your root canal'ed tooth is decayed and breaking apart. Have your doctor examine it.
