The other answers are close but not complete.
You have gaseous necrosis of the dental pulp...the nerve of the tooth has died and while decomposing is producing gas. The cold makes the gas contract, relieving the pressure through the tooth into the jaw.
The cure is to have the nerve tissue removed. This can be done with a root canal treatment or by removing the tooth.
I have had many people enter my office carrying a glass of ice water which they would swish for the pain relief.

The nerve in one of your teeth is irreversibly inflamed... You will need either to get the tooth extracted or root canal treated (if the destruction done by the cavity not to extensive).

The cold releiving the pain is very typical of this... as well as laying down increasing the pain.

Thats because if there is more blood pressure in the tooth, pain occur; if you lay down, blood rush in your head, increasing blood pressure, thus pain... cold make blood vessels to contract, thus decrease the blood in the tooth, so decrease the pressure on the nerve, so it decrease the pain.

u either need a root canal or have the tooth pulled cuz ur starting to get an infection...go see a dentist quick!!!!! trust me!!!!!!

Do you suffer from Sinus problems. This could also be the cause because lying down can increase the pressure. The other problem could be the nerve is begining to die either way you need to see a dentist.

Clove oil:Is great to use for toothaches. Apply a little on the affected tooth for some time and then rinse with warm water. Boil 5 grams of fresh peppermint in 1 cup water with a little salt. And rinse mouth well with this .Peppermint is an antiseptic and contains menthol which relives pain .Try out http://useinfo-dentalcare.blogspot.com/ for more details.
