Getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow?!

Question: I'm getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow and am kind of scared. I was wondering if it's likely they'll give me drugs-would it be appropriate to request good (i.e. strong) ones? I'm terrified it's going to hurt a lot, but I don't want to sound sketchy asking for good drugs...I've been googling wisdom teeth removal and found a few people on forums saying they had no drugs what so ever, even during the surgery. Why would the dentist choose to not give them drugs? Is it likely this will happen to me? How long will it take to be functioning again? How long will it take for the swelling to go down? Also, any reassurance would be gratefully appreciated as I'm freaking out a little..

Don't be scared. I had all four wisdom teeth taken out in one office visit. Believe me, your mouth will be numbed and there will be no pain during the procedure. After the procedure, the dentist will prescribe medication to relieve pain and swelling. The swelling will go down in a couple of days. You'll be functioning again within a week.

if the dentist puts you out. you wont feel a thing.

Im guessing the dentist won't put you out. Before I have had a tooth taken out. They inject two needles filled with muscle relaxer into your gum.

That's right, two needles with the power of an Appollo Rocket straight into your gum. In about 10 seconds your gum will have lost all feeling and they will just yank the tooth out.

Now seeing as your taking out both. That's four needles into your gum.

If your really lucky you can have sleeping gas. I once had to have 5 of my teeth taken out in one go, and they gave me sleeping gas. I woke up with no teeth, hehe

Don't be scared. Nothing to it. I had two wisdom's pulled last year, didn't feel a thing.

My gums were injected with novacane, felt a few stings, but my mouth went completely numb.

The surgeon actually had to split one of my teeth in half to remove.

After the surgery, I was prescribed vicodin & anitibiotic.

You'll do just fine, your just having dental nerves, we all have them.

Your oral surgeon will know best.

Know what a dry socket is, and follow their guidelines for care TO THE LETTER! Don't mess with things you aren't supposed to eat or drink! And don't think you will bounce back from this in a day- I had all 4 of mine out the same day, and woke up just long enough each day to use the bathroom and take the next round of meds. Slept through the worst of it, woke up on day four kinda woozy, but no real pain to speak of. Kinda tore down for the rest of the week, but after that, it was all good.

Trust the dentist- they go to school a long time to know the answers, and there's no reason it shouldn't go like clockwork.

sorry i was thinking of the grown up tooth that kill hurts lol the wisdom teeth i got 32 of them removed for my braces it didnt hurt they dont even need to like put you out i was scared 2 so i made them get me some drugs that numb it and sat there for like an hour letting it soak in then i let them do the needle novacane and i didnt feel anything it just felt like some pressure idk it was nothing

but if the dentist does put you out make sure some 1s in the room watching like family...i was watching tv b4 and the dentist put her out for her teeth or w.e. and the dentist guy raped the lady while she was out =( my mom got hers out and all she could eat was jello and pudding but thats becuz her doctor was crap and did it bad or something and it got infected nad her whole entire side of her mouth was like huge and she had to get the other 1 out the next day but she didnt go she went suk where else then it was done good

don't worry they will numb you up and you won't feel any thing you can ask to be put to sleep if you have too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With me they put me out, it takes about 45 minutes to get it done. Before you do it would be a good idea to take some sort of medicine for swelling.. That will definately help you later on. I can home and rested for 3 hours.. after that I was up and doing stuff.. Less then 24 hours after my surgery I was at a football game.. So it was a breeze.. Usually they give you vicodin (sp?) and you should of tried if BEFORE surgery, to make sure you dont throw up.. Its horrible to throw up after youve had your wisdom teeth removed.. Make sure and eat only soft food, and gently rise after eating, you dont want to dislodge the blood clots, cause that can cause some pain and problems. Good luck tomorrow.. I'm sure you'll be fine, worrying was worse then the actual thing, promise!

When I got my wisdom teeth pulled I thought that it would hurt. I had to have surgery for my two bottom teeth. They had to split them into two pieces to get them out, but when i woke up it didn't hurt at all. Do you remember how it was like when one of your baby teeth fell out? Well I think that it hurts less. As far as the drugs, they'll know just exactly what you'll need.

get put to sleep if you can. and that is an absolutely NORMAL ( not sketchy) request, and in my opinion requirement for choosing a Dr. to do your surgery. when i had my wisdom teeth out, which were impacted with an abcess requiring emergency surgery, i told the dr that i have a very low tolerance for pain and that i would NEED to get a good Rx so that i could sleep for a few days while healing. he wrote me a good painkiller and everything was fine. don't feel nervous to ask the dr. for an Rx you will need it so that you can relax and take it easy after the surgery. good luck.

I wouldn't worry too much. You will most likely receive prescriptions for ibuprofen and a narcotic. You will not be pain-free after the surgery, but the medications will make the pain bearable. During the surgery, you will have local anesthetic, and possibly other IV medications if you are being sedated.

Keep in mind that people who have an axe to grind with dentists say a lot of things that aren't necessarily true in forums, and people say a LOT of things that aren't true when it comes to extractions. Ask five people and you'll probably get one or two stories about the "knee on the chest," which does not ever happen.

Take your ibuprofen, eat lots of ice cream, and stay hydrated!

I had mine done today. They used IV sedation, which knocked me out. There was no pain, and you won't really remember a whole lot after it's over.

You should be more worried about what happens AFTER the procedure, while you're still healing. Follow all of the dentist's instructions and take it easy for a few days.

hey,im 18 and i got all for of my wisdom teeth out 4days ago, they gave me a intervenous injection in my arm. i was away with the verys haha. this means they didnt put me to sleep and i was freaking out bout it! but it all good i didnt feel anything apart from the dentist puting the needle in my arm just a little prick. then woke up, u think ur asleep but your not. it doesnt hert after because they give u good pain killers. you face swells up a bit but that doesnt last long about 2days. im sweet now. they worst thing about it is you cant eat solid food! but i ate mc donalds today haha. ull be fine.
