What does it mean when dentists number your teeth?!

Question:

What does it mean when dentists number your teeth?

Okay, I'm pretty sure that people out there that have ever heard of this probably know what I'm talking about. Something like "The bridging between number 6a and 6b should be widened for the new tooth". That was just an example, not a real statement. Any ideas?

Answers:

All teeth are numbered, so the hygenist & Dentist can keep track of which ones have what problems. We all follow the same numbering system. For example, both you & I have # 1 in the same location in our mouths.
