Dental Prophy? Subgingval or strictly supra?!
Question:
Dental Prophy? Subgingval or strictly supra?
Do you believe it consists of going subgingival, even in localized 5mm pockets? I need a website that states either. I'm a new graduate of dental hygiene and I believe that a prophy can include going subging. to get the pt clean w/o doing SRP. That's what I was taught, but I can't seem to find it in writing.
Answers:
Hi. I agree with you.
I don't think that localized 5mm pockets are a reason to diagnose SRP. For a couple of reasons.
First, there can be a 1mm discrepency depending on how you angle the probe. So, would you SRP 4mm pockets? No.
Second, just because there are 5mm pockets doesn't mean perio. They could be pseudopockets.
Also, I think you end up going slightly sub on ANY prophy. It's just part of the game...
Just my opinion. Not sure you'll find it in writing...
