My 15 year old daughter needs braces....but she doesnt want to take care of her !

Question: I have to stay on her all the time to make her brush her teeth. Also the dentist has told her she doesnt need to drink coke, eat hard candy or suckers because she gets cavitys alot easier than most people. Especially since she is getting braces, I really have to make sure she stays away from this stuff. The cost is about 4000 to get it done. I am tired of griping at her constantly....any suggestions to get her to take better care of her teeth?? Other than constant nagging! and do you think I should even get it done for her?

Do you have any adult friends who didn't take care of THEIR teeth who could tell her and SHOW her exactly what happens when you don't take care of your teeth?? Maybe if you try to explain it to her in a way she might understand... like for example.... take out of her closet 3 of her most FAVORITE OUTFITS, a pair of her favorite shoes and her favorite jacket... tell her THIS is how much it costs to fill ONE CAVITY... tell her with the amount of cavities she has gotten, you could have bought her an entirely new wardrobe.....then tell her that by eating the candy and drinking the soda, she is limiting the amount of funds YOU will have to buy her new clothes.. and then START BUYING HER LESS STUFF until she starts taking care of her teeth---let her know it's either new clothes or her teeth... SHE can only choose one. If that doesn't work, let her dentist show her pictures of people's mouths who have all kinds of dental diseases (they have them)...maybe that could shock her into taking care of her teeth... ALSO, it is VERY VERY TRUE that if a person doesn't properly take care of their MOUTHS and teeth, that infections throughout other parts of their body START at the teeth... and in rare cases, people have DIED because they totally neglected their teeth to the point where their bodies were LOADED with infections and illnesses from it... Also, another way to get her to STOP drinking the soda and eating the candy is to STOP LETTING HER BUY IT... (cut off her money)...

honestly you should get it done for her, you can neglect the care of your chiled just because they are being ignorent for not taking care of them... well show her some ranchy pic of people who done take care of there teeth, and if she still doesnt whant to do what you say then ground her because of it, then she will shee how stupid and unrash she is being to not take care of her own health take things away from her like phone privliges and computer and friend privilages to make her do what you say, but best of luck with what your dooing and i hope all is well

i have braces myself and the thing that keeps me taking care of my teeth is the thought of what will happen if i dont and the sooner my teeth get better the sooner they come of make sure she realises what will happen to her teeth if she does not keep them clean and healthy like what they will look like and how they will feel

Does your Daughter like Boys? -Point out to her- that bad teeth are NOT very good attributes for landing "Hot Dates..." & that if SHE's not gonna take care of her teeth, -YOU'RE not going to throw your money away on Braces for them. With age & Maturity- comes Responsibility. And if SHE'S not gonna take care of "What's Hers"- nobody else Will. You're not going to be around to be her Nursemaid all her life. So stop wasting your breath "nagging"- & tell her to "get with the Program". -Or SHE's paying for the next visit to the Dentist!

show her a pic of someone that didnt brush their teeth. also no 1 wants to go out with some girl that has nasty breath. and for the candy and soda, you shouldnt keep it in the house.

You need to find your daughters currency. For example, if she is interested in computer, when she does not brush her teeth she loses time on the computer for the day. Make sure to be consistent though. It sucks at the beginning but it will be effect.
I would also make sure I didn't have the things she's not supposed to consume in the house. Finally, if the braces are only for cosmetic reasons I would not allow her to get the braces until she maintains her teeth health. It is a waste of money otherwise.

If she won't look after her dental hygiene and diet, then that is a very good reason NOT to provide braces until she can be responsible.
After all, she probably doesn't really NEED braces except for appearances? She doesn't have a functional problem which prevent her from eating or talking properly, does she? So don't waste your money on braces now, and then later on expensive dental bills to fix up all her decayed teeth. Braces are great plaque traps and a lack of hygiene can really stuff up teeth.
On a few occasions my local orthodontist has removed braces from kids (after discussion with the parents) because they weren't keeping them clean . A waste of money for the parents. So why even start them if you're not happy with her efforts?
Maybe when she's a working adult and badly wants to have braces, she can even pay for them herself. You can be very sure that THEN she'll look after them.
DON'T GIVE HER BRACES. WAIT LONGER UNTIL TRULY READY OR NOT AT ALL.

There is no point in paying the money to get her braces if she is not behind it. She will have to take it very serious and be totally for it for it to work i suggest you search the net for some pics of peoples teeth that were not looked after also of people who needed braces and didnt do it.
