Valium or Ativan?!

Question: I'm having gum surgery [not my whole mouth, just a small patch] in a month, and my DDS said he could give me valium or ativan to help me relax the night before and during the surgery.

My question is, which is better? And has anyone ever used either during a dental procedure?

Thanks.

My dentist gave me a choice of ativan or valium when I had teeth extracted [to make way for my dentures]. I chose the valium because I thought it would work better.....WRONG! The valium actually worked in reverse.....it made me very edgy and nervous the night before, and when I took it an hour before my procedure, it made me so nervous, that I felt like walking right out of the dentist's office.

After I finally had the procedure done, I spoke to others who chose the ativan, and they said it work great....no edginess, it just made them feel very calm.

In hindsight, I definitely would have chosen the ativan.

Good luck to you, and I hope things go well.

Everyone is a little bit different-- they both work about the same. Ativan can have an amnesia affect (so you don't remember procedure)

Whereas Valium just mostly makes you relaxed--

They're both good and both in the same class of medicines, so either would be good. Ativan is more powerful (it's given in smaller doses), but some people react better to Valium. As this is your first time with either, it's a coin toss.

i had valium the nite before, the morning of and an hour before getting a tooth pulled (and i had the gas too) and i cried the whole flippin time.......but then again i have a severe irrational fear of the dentist....but i work in a hospital and we give people who are detoxing ativan and it works really well, if the dentist gave me an option i probably woulda went w/ativan...

Everyone reacts differently to medications. Valium tends to be a little bit more sedating/relaxing in my patients. Ativan tends to work very well also but some patients have difficulty remembering the procedure (not necessarily a bad thing). Have the doctor prescribe two of each and try each one a few nites prior to the surgery and see which one works the best on you. Good luck

i don't advice u to take any of them .... just the anesthesia during the surgery and pain killers after that...
it's a minor surgery not worth to have any of Valium other drugs....
