When the teeth just hurt like hell...or when they strat turning black? How do you know when your tooth is too far gone to be fixed without having to go to a dentist. I know someone planning on letting her teeth get worse so they just get pulled instead of being repaired

Before letting her teeth get worse try to work out a payment plan with a dentist; teeth can be assessed and then told if they can be saved or not; the idea of let her teeth is most likely due to limited resources---no money---she can try to visit a public clinic; they can help but there is usually long lines because there is a lot of poverty in our land of plenty.
you can choose to have them pulled now if you like, they dont have to be beyond repair before a dentist will do that. your teeth, your choice. many people elect to do that instead of crowns because of the cost.
Teeth can be repaired in a lot of bad conditions but if someone does not want their teeth who are we to argue.
Stains can be removed with cleanings and brushing, and hurting my be from something else like an infection, not just a cavity.
Look up abscesses and read about them and then tell your friend about what can happen if they get a real bad abscessed tooth.
