Do dentists still use laughing gas?!

Question: I changed dentists so I could have one that offered "sedation dentistry" because I am not comfortable having my mouth open for a long time and I gag easily. I had a root canal done with sedation and it was GREAT, but the last time I needed a cavity filled and the dentist didn't use anything except a shot. I mentioned I was a sedation patirnt but he said it was a quick procedure and I would be find. It was quick or simple and I was mad. I'm willing to pay more to not spend an hour of fear and dread and discomfort. I thought dentists used laughing gas. Is it not used anymore? I don't want to ask about it because he might think I'm a drug seeker. I don't even take asprin, really.

yes. its called nitrous oxide, and is still commonly used. you usually must request it...but make sure that a dentist or someone certified to administer the gas is ALWAYS present in the room. they won't think you're a drug seeker, they'll understand that you're nervous. just ask :)

sorry honey, there is no laughing gas...
but there are laughing jokes...

I had nitrous with my tooth extraction. However, I felt it made me more anxious...my heart was racing and a got very diaphoretic (sweaty).

Perhaps a Valium or small dose of ativan may be enough to take the edge of the anxiety? I'd at least ask.

My son was given an injection that put him out for about an hour.

Conscious Sedation is now used. It is very safe if administered by a dentist who is certified in Conscious Sedation. Many monitors are used during conscious sedation and emergency equipment is in the room. BE SURE TO GO TO A DENTIST WHO IS CERTIFIED IN CONSCIOUS SEDATION.

sure! right before they give you the bill.
