Tell me about fillings?!

Question: i've got to have a tooth filling at the dentist and i'm really frightened! do i have to have an injection in my gums? because iv'e heard for some filling you don't need to have anesthetic? does i depend on how big the hole is in your tooth? because mine is really small?

don't worry i get really frightened too, to the point where i shake, but its always ok! The injection is just like a pin prick, sometimes like a netal sting but not much more, and half your face (the side the injection was on) feels numb for about an hour and a half, and because of this it can sometimes give you a lisp, and you have to be really careful not to chew your cheeks by accident... when it wears off you can also ache a bit but don't worry it will go off in less than an hour. Really you do have to have an injection unless you have a really high pain thresh hold, and if you do then you can ask the dentist not to, because some people have allergic reactions to it, but again thats very rare. Their not going to put you an laughing gas just for a filling. If the hole is really small then they're not going to take very much away, i had a very small filling in the side and they literately just took away the rough sides to make a smooth surface, it was hardly anything. Sometimes, though only if you have a really crappy dentist, they fill it too high, but if is the case (if it hasn't settled down in a couple of days) you should be able to go back for free and get the top of it reshaped.
I hope this helps, i know its hard but no worries :D, good luck!

Some dentists gave my kids a very small amount of laughing gas and it relaxed them enough. Tell your dentists your concerns. He will try to make it less painful as possible, even using a little bit of numbner

i have had countless filling & never had an injection & at one point i only had half a tooth & still managed to do it without numbing
they really arent bad believe me & if you do have a needle they dont hurt at all! they just make your mouth feel really funny after lol

hpe it goes ok
xxx

I just got mine done yesterday! If they do anesthetic, then you shouldn't be worried. I have a phobia about needles, and even I'm saying that you shouldn't be worried... They numb you up so much before hand, and the needle might look scary, but you can't even feel it!

You have to check with your dentist to see if he would fill the cavities without a shot. Some dentists will fill the cavity without a shot. It all depends on your tolerance for pain and the size of the cavity. Personally if you don't want a shot, ask them to give you some laughing gas. I had many cavities filled with just laughing gas. It's great stuff. But you still feel the pain, but not as much. My reccomendation would be to use both. Have them give you laughing gas and then have them give you the shot. You won't really care when they give you the shot because you will feel like your floating in thin air with the laughing gas. They also rub some stuff on your gum to make your gum numb before giving you the shot. Just close your eyes and you really won't know what is going on if the dentist is any good. Let them know that you are frightened and they will be extra careful. They want returning customers just like any other business.

well, I'm really young ( kid) and Ive had over 10 fillings in my life. it doesn't hurt it tickles alot. when they give you numbing medicine they put a needle in your mouth and give you 2 shots on the inside of your cheeks. this doesn't hurt alot but it hurts less if you don't think about it and you squeeze something, like your hands. then when it is time for the fillings they take a drill and drill the tooth that needs drilling. this part doesn't hurt AT ALL. you will not feel a thing. sometimes i bring a book and read while they are working on me. and sometimes i just fall asleep. relax you will feel better when its finished.
