I have a series of questions about dental health. Please help?!

Question:

I have a series of questions about dental health. Please help?

Okay, first question is what would cause someone's teeth to become extraordinarily brittle? I'm in my mid-twenties and my teeth are breaking apart, regardless of good oral hygiene. I'll just be eating something not even hard and feel something hard, and take it out to realize it's part of another tooth. Is there a medical reason for this? I brush and floss as directed.

Second question, when I first started having this problem a few years ago, my dentist basically reconstructed some of my teeth with filling material, and it apparently did NOT work, since the fillings were the first to go. Is there any kind of more permenant fix, that will be healthy and also improve the look of my teeth?

Lastly, does anyone know what kind of cost I could be looking at? I mean, I know it depends on if I have to have root canals, crowns, quite possibly be sedated, but if we go ahead and assume it's for the whole mouth, do you know if I'm looking at hundreds, thousands, or more dollars?

Answers:

It sounds to me like you could be clenching and grinding your teeth and that they are breaking as a result. The amount of force that we use when we chew food is unbelievable. You could consider a few options. First, get an inexpensive sports mouthguard and fit it to your teeth to wear at night. This will provide a cushion for your teeth if you are clenching and grinding at night. Second, you might consider seeing an orthodontist. When I had my consultation I could clearly see on the models of my teeth that I was wearing down the chewing surfaces of the back ones and I was only your age at the time. I was able to see that I might need root canals or crowns due to the wearing of the teeth and opted for that (and other reasons) to get the braces to align my teeth properly to fix this problem. Crowns are about $700 per tooth, but I am not sure about braces (guessing $3500.00)
Good luck! Hope this helps...
