No temp cap after root canal?!

Question:

No temp cap after root canal?

I just got a root canal and the dentist did not place a temporary cap over the tooth. It now has what looks like some plaster over the area that was worked on. My next visit is in 14 days to get the cap placed on the tooth.

My question is... Is it normal for the dentist to not put a temporary cap over the tooth that has been worked on? Is my dentist being stingy? I paid $1500 for this work and now I have to wait around for 2 weeks with an unprotected tooth... eating mushy foods and not using that side of my mouth. :(

I first went in on Friday (June 1st) and he started the root canal and placed that temporary plaster over it. I then returned today (June 6th) to have the root canal completed. Again he just placed what looks like plaster over the tooth, which is actually just a very slim piece of tooth left.

So no, I don't think a preperation was made at all for a cap, he didn't take impressions of my teeth. I'm not very familiar with dental jargon, so sorry if I misunderstood the question.

Answers:

Did they just do the root canal or did they do the root canal and the crown prep? Some dentists won't do the root canal and crown prep in the same day. I'm guessing what you're seeing is the temporary filling that was placed and that you're next visit is for the crown prep. Doesn't hurt to call the dentist tomorrow and ask.

Updated: Your tooth should be ok, but try not to chew any hard, crunchy foods (ice, corn nuts, etc...).
