Important question?!

Question:

Important question?

i went to the oral surgeon the other day and he told me i have to get all 4 wisdom teeth removed at once, and since they are all "in bone" i would have to be put asleep to do it, any tips? how much pain afterwards? also what are the chances of not waking up. thanks

Answers:

I would definitely take the oral surgeon's advice and get general anesthesia. You really do not want to be awake while somebody is chiseling your jaws in four different places.

I have not had my wisdom teeth out, but I would imagine that this would be fairly painful for awhile, and you will need potent pain medication postoperatively.

The chances of "not waking up" are pretty small, on the order of maybe 1 out of 20 or 30 thousand, not very common. I would ask the oral surgeon what his level of training is, who is going to be administering the anesthesia and monitoring your vital signs, and whether or not they use pulse oximetry, EKG, end-tidal CO2 and temperature monitoring. If they do not, proceed at your own risk, and I don't care if they do say "we have done 10,000 without those monitors and never had a problem" which is the usual response from anyone who does not follow standard recommendations.
