I am getting Braces on June 22 and want to know everything about them?!

Question:

I am getting Braces on June 22 and want to know everything about them?

I would like to know everything you can tell me about braces. Like does it hurt when you get them put on your mouth. What color should I get? Will it be hard brushing my teeth. I am also going to have to wear headgear at night and will it be uncomfortable.
WHAT COLOR SHOULD I GET?

Answers:

The braces themselves don't hurt, nor does the process of having them put on. It will be hard brushing your teeth because you'll need to spend extra time and extra care when brushing, however you quickly get used to it. No idea on the colors, I've only had braces for 7 weeks so far, only had silver one time, dark blue at the moment.

The first few days will be painful, but nothing a few painkillers can't cure. Trust me, after those few days, it only gets better.

I don't wear headgear, but friends that have, have told me it gets irritating at first, but quickly get used to it.

General advice for braces, courtesy of archwired.com (I suggest you visit it, great website):

Stay well hydrated always - helps avoid chafing and helps with speaking!

Lip balm will help with talking Smile

Use wax as soon as you feel any chafing, and keep wax in place 24/7 (yes, even when eating! It's not going to do any harm if you swallow some by accident) til the trouble’s passed.

Do try to get back to eating your normal diet asap - chewing increases blood flow in your gums, and so helps you get past any uncomfortable stage all the faster Smile Honestly.

Maintain good oral hygiene – apart from anything else, this is one of the best things you can do to minimize the chances of popping a bracket.

Don't hesitate to call your ortho if you start having problems like a pokey wire, or if a bracket should pop off! "Comfort appointments" are expected by most orthos.

Don’t be a martyr to any discomfort or pain you might experience – if you feel that you need a pain reliever, then take one! (Of course, always be careful to use them safely, according to their instructions)

Consider trying salt-water rinses – some people find doing this daily helps avoid sores; others (like me) find them only to be of any real help in healing up once sores have taken hold.

Remember to live your life - braces aren't the boss of you!
Stay positive - keep your eyes on the prize! Attitude’s not everything, but in the braces game it certainly helps!
