Sensodyne ToothPaste during pregnancy?!

Question:

Sensodyne ToothPaste during pregnancy?

I use sensodyne exclusively per my dentist. I was told to use it from now on, not just for 2 weeks. Is this okay during pregnancy? It contains potassium nitrate 5%.

Thanks.

I don't know if the United States even has any toothpastes without flouride. Does anyone else feel the same about flouride toothpaste? We even have flouride in our water supply.

I had stage 4 periodontal disease and my roots were showing. I have since corrected my deep pockets with 2 scaling/planing procedures and floss every night. (it was a lack of cleanings and money to see the dentist that seemed to cause this condition) My teeth are sensitive because my gums have pulled back after the scaling/planing procedures and have always been sensitive. I think my enamel is wearing down too which may be part of it.

Any further comments would be very much appreciated. I know very little about dental health and would be interested to know more, especially about which toothpaste to use while pregnant.

As a dental hygienist I used a sensitive paste with confidence during my pregnancy. Fluoride should not be ingested (eaten) but when you brush with it, it leaves a beneficial (cavity reducing) layer on the teeth. You could try not using it and see if you really see a difference in your sensitivity level and if you can't tolerate it then resume with it's use. The potassium nitrate is in the paste to block the porous (sensitivity causing) parts of your teeth and if you stop using the paste it will eventually go away on its own. I hope this helps and good luck. Its nice to hear you are taking good care of yourself and the baby. Make sure that you aren't eating unpasturized cheesed and lunch meats, those are a concern.
